Five Players Score as USA Moves on to 5th Place Match vs. Iran on Friday
SEVILLA, Spain (July 16, 2019) – Five different players scored for the U.S. Para 7-a-Side National Team in a convincing 6-0 rout of Argentina at the IFCPF World Cup on Tuesday evening. The win advances the USA to a second-consecutive 5th-6th Place match, where they’ll face Iran on Friday, July 19. The USA’s fifth place finish in 2017 was the program’s highest placement in the world finals.
The Red White and Blue wasted little time getting on the board, when David Garza drew and converted a penalty kick in just the fourth minute. Ben Lindau doubled the lead with his own penalty kick ten minutes later after Cameron DeLillo was taken down in the box. The goals were each players’ first at this World Cup.
DeLillo was a menace to Argentina in the first half and finally got his goal, advancing a ball into the area from the right side and rounding the ‘keeper before putting away his fourth goal of the tournament.
A rattled Argentina side – which had defeated the U.S. at the 2016 Paralympic Games and 2018 Copa America – made two substitutions before the half, including replacing goalkeeper Nahuel Gutierrez with Matias Salvat. The changes did little to stem the U.S. attack. Within a minute USA forward Nick Mayhugh cleared a ball from his own area some 50+ yards, catching Salvat way off his line as the ball bounced over the ‘keeper to put the U.S. up 4-0 at the break.
Argentina’s German Rosmussi picked up his second yellow card in the first minute of the second half, which further entrenched the U.S. dominance. While Sean Boyle came up big on two occasions, Mayhugh added his team-high 10th goal of the tournament in the 37th minute and Shea Hammond his fifth six minutes later to finish the rout.
Up Next: The USA will play Iran for 5th place on Friday at 5 a.m. ET in a rematch of the teams’ first group stage match, which the USA won 3-2 in dramatic fashion. Iran fell to Brazil in the quarterfinals and defeated the Netherlands 6-0 Tuesday. Fans can follow along on twitter @ussoccer_pnt and Instagram at @ussoccer_pnt.
