- Named USMNT captain 26 times putting him eighth on the all-time captains list.
- Selected to the 2022 FIFA World Cup roster in Qatar at age 35, playing every minute in all four matches and anchoring a backline that recorded two shutouts.

- Appeared in the 2023 Gold Cup, starting group-stage matches vs. Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis (6-0), and Trinidad and Tobago (6-0), the quarterfinal penalty-shootout win over Canada (2-2, 3-2 on penalties) in Houston, and the semifinal penalty loss to Panama (1-1, 4-3 on penalties) in Las Vegas.
- Played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 Nations League Final victory over Mexico on March 24, 2024, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, partnering Chris Richards at center back.
- Named oldest field player ever selected to a USMNT Copa America roster at 36 years, 263 days; started all three Copa America 2024 group-stage matches.
- Captained the USMNT during the 2025 Gold Cup, starting all six matches: group stage vs. Trinidad and Tobago (June 15, San Jose), Saudi Arabia (June 19, Austin), and Haiti (June 22, Arlington); quarterfinal penalty win over Costa Rica; semifinal 2-1 win over Guatemala (July 2, St. Louis); and the 2-1 final loss to Mexico on July 6 at NRG Stadium in Houston.

- Signed with MLS club Charlotte FC on Aug. 7, 2024. Made his Charlotte debut on Aug. 24, 2024, against New York Red Bulls.
- Appeared in 19 matches during the 2025 MLS season, anchoring the backline as Charlotte improved from ninth place to fourth in the Eastern Conference.
- Spent nine seasons at Fulham FC (2015-2024), amassing 312 appearances and helping the Cottagers earn three Premier League promotions (2018, 2020, 2022).
- Named Bolton Wanderers' Player of the Year in consecutive seasons (2013-14 and 2014-15) during a 126-appearance stint after transferring from MLS for 2.5 million pounds in January 2012.
- Drafted by the New York Red Bulls in the second round (18th overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft; started all 30 matches as a rookie and was named team Defender of the Year.

- Married to Kristen Sapienza in 2012, whom he met at Saint Louis University where she starred on the women's soccer team.
- Father of three children: sons Aidan and Theodore, and daughter Lilia.
- Eldest of five siblings with 15 cousins on his mother's side, reflecting deep family ties in the St. Louis area.
- Attended Saint Louis University (2006-2009), earning NSCAA first-team All-Region and second-team All-Conference honors while studying finance and economics.
