Atlanta United were worthy winners of their first Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup crown with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota United in front of a USOC-record Final crowd of 35,709 at their own Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Georgia on Tuesday 27 August. An own-goal from Chase Gasper and a wicked strike from Pity Martinez assisted by Justin Meram, both in the first half, set the 5-Stripes on their way to victory. The Loons pulled one back early in the second half via Robin Lob but it wasn’t enough to keep the men from Atlanta from picking up a debut Open Cup crown to go alongside their 2018 MLS Cup and recently earned Campeones Cup in a suddenly bulging trophy cabinet.
