After opening the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup with victories over Denmark and Nigeria, the U.S. Women’s National Team clinched its spot atop Group A with a 3-0 win over Korea DPR on June 27, 1999 at Foxboro Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
Head coach Tony DiCicco, a Connecticut native coaching the team close to home, made several changes to the starting lineup for the third and final group stage match, with Sara Whalen, Tiffany Roberts, Tisha Venturini and Shannon MacMillan making their first starts of the tournament.
The depth and collective commitment of the squad was on full display as MacMillan, who led the U.S. in goals at the 1996 Summer Olympics, opened the scoring in the 56th minute and then assisted on goals by fellow gold medalist Venturini in the 68th and 76th minutes to clinch the victory and secure the USA’s spot in the knockout rounds.
In celebration of the 25-year anniversary of the 1999 World Cup, the 1999 Women’s World Cup team will be honored on July 13 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. prior to kickoff of USWNT vs. Mexico in the “Impact 99” legacy match, presented by New York Life.
