Guatemala City, Guatemala (May 1, 2025) – The U.S. Women’s Futsal National Team battled hard, but ultimately fell 3-1 to Canada in the group stage finale at the 2025 Concacaf W Futsal Championship at Domo Polideportivo on Thursday.
With the result, the USA (1W-1L-1D; 4 pts.) finishes third in Group B, marking the end of the team’s run at the inaugural Concacaf W Futsal Championship.
FIRST HALF
Canada got on the board with a well-worked two-pass sequence out of the back. Maude Lagace hit a diagonal ball to Cynthia Gaspar-Freire at the top of the penalty arc where she fended off pressure and laid a backheel for Stephanie-Ann Dadalie who smashed her powerful effort home at 16:43.
The USA responded two minutes later as Ashley Henderson advanced the ball into the attacking half before laying a pass for Paige Pierson on the right. There, she was initially denied by Canada ‘keeper Lea Palacio-Tellier, but collected the rebound and buried a low effort into the empty net to equalize and collect her first career goal at 14:17.
Canada regained the lead with 3:34 remaining as Maude Lagace drove forward and powered a low effort toward goal that was redirected by Gaspar-Freire in front of goal to beat Goodrich and make it 2-1.
SECOND HALF
Coming out of the locker room in search of the equalizer, the U.S. came close at 15:14 when Henderson strolled forward and let loose on a low, left-footed blast that inched just wide of the right post. At 12:35, the U.S. did well to advance the ball forward as Jeanette Fieldsend found Emanuelly Ferreira on the left, where she unleashed a low effort that Canada 'keeper Lea Palacio-Tellier pushed out for a corner kick.
Despite the chances, Canada got a third goal with just over 12 minutes remaining. Esther Brossard won the ball in the back and quickly moved forward, before sliding a pass to Erica Hindmarsh on the left, who powered her effort past Goodrich.
After securing a two-goal advantage, Canada set up in a more defensive posture, making it difficult for the U.S. to break through. The USA still found two good chances with just under six minutes left. At 5:36, Sarah Martin was able to slide the ball left to Ferreira, where her first-time effort was put out for a corner kick. On the ensuing corner, Ferreria played the ball back for Fieldsend, whose first-time effort was redirected in front of goal by Martin, but Palacio-Tellier did well to get across and hang on to the shot.
Following those opportunities, the U.S. deployed Carlie Banks as the flying goalkeeper, giving the team an extra attacker as it looked to claw back into the game. With 1:48 remaining, Banks played a square ball across for Martin, who saw her low effort turned away via a kick save from Palacio-Tellier in what was the last dangerous chance of the match for the U.S.
