The holiday weekend provided high-stakes drama in continental title games and the USWNT player pool was right in the thick of it. The Concacaf W Champions Cup crowned its first-ever champion in a Gotham FC team led by Emily Sonnet. The UEFA Women’s Champions League Final saw Emily Fox and Jenna Nighswonger’s Arsenal lift the trophy in an emotional upset win over Barcelona FC.
Meanwhile, the last week of NWSL play before the international break featured some drama as well with the Kansas City Current currently holding the top spot. Alyssa Thompson, Emma Sears and Ashley Hatch all scored in Week 10, and Gisele Thompson picked up an assist.
GOTHAM FC CLAIMS CHAMPIONS CUP
In the inaugural Concacaf W Champions Cup Final, Gotham FC beat Tigres UANL of Mexico 1-0 to claim the first-ever trophy at Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, Mexico. Emily Sonnett played 90 minutes on the back line, helping Gotham earn a shutout. Esther González scored the lone goal for Gotham after she rebounded her own penalty miss. The penalty kick itself was earned by Sonnett, who was body-slammed bya Tigres defender inside the penalty area on a set play. Sam Coffey and the Portland Thorns took third place in the competition over the weekend, topping Club América 3-0.
ARSENAL WIN UEFA WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
In a much-hyped and widely-viewed UEFA Women’s Champions League Final, Emily Fox and Arsenal defeated the favorite Barcelona 1-0 in Lisbon, Portugal. Barcelona was on the hunt for a three-peat, but Arsenal instead took home its second-ever European title after last winning in 2007. Jenna Nighswonger was on the bench for the Gunners. Swede Stina Blackstenius scored in the 74th minute, breaking the deadlock. She netted in all three finals as Arsenal beat Real Madrid and Lyon in the lead-up to the final.
RACING LOUISVILLE’S DRAMATIC FINISH
The Racing Louisville (4-4-2, 14 points) 3-2 win against Angel City (4-4-2, 14 points) featured two goals by USWNT players. Emma Sears — fresh off her second USWNT call-up of the year — scored in the 53rd minute, notching Louisville’s second goal with a header off a corner kick. Gisele Thompson assisted Riley Tiernan on Angel City’s first goal in the 48th minute. Alyssa Thompson later scored a penalty kick in the 68th minute to bring Los Angeles within one. Still, even as Racing Louisville had to play with 10 women after Kayla Ficher was shown a red card in the 67th minute, Angel City couldn’t find the equalizer despite pushing hard in the last 30 minutes of the match.
ASHLEY HATCH SCORES SIXTH GOAL
Ashley Hatch currently ranks tied for second in the NWSL in goals with six. She scored her most recent one in the 35th minute leading Washington Spirit(6-3-1, 19 points) to a2-1 win over Seattle Reign FC. The goal was her second in the last two weeks for the Spirit. Almost halfway through the 2025 season, Hatch is well-positioned in the race for the Golden Boot as the league’s top scorer.
