USWNT head coach Emma Hayes has made six changes from the starting XI that faced China PR on May 31.
Today’s starting lineup has an average of just 20.1 caps, including this match, as opposed to 49.1 caps for the match against China. Today’s starting lineup has six players with nine or fewer caps.
The starting lineup against Brazil on April 8 averaged 17.9 caps. Before that, the last time starting lineup averaged fewer than 25 caps was April 12, 2022, vs. Uzbekistan when Vlatko Andonovski put out a Starting XI that averaged 22.3 caps, including that start. It was the first cap for Naomi Girma.
The lowest average for a starting lineup before that was March 17, 2001 vs. reigning Olympic champion Norway at the Algarve Cup when the starting lineup averaged eight caps per player, but that game was a bit of an anomaly as U.S. Soccer brought a very young team to Portugal made up mostly of Under-23 players as the U.S. veterans were in pre-season training camps for the first season of the Women’s United Soccer League (WUSA).
Meaning, that the lineup for this game vs. Jamaica averages the second fewest caps of any USWNT starting XI in the past 24 years.
STARTING XI NOTES:
Phallon Tullis-Joyce, 28, earns her third cap and makes her third start after earning a clean sheet against China PR on May 31. Her only other match for the USA came on April 5 of this year in a 2-0 shutout of Brazil at SoFi Stadium. Tullis-Joyce comes into camp fresh off helping Manchester United earn a berth to UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying as well as a spot in the FA Cup Final.
Naomi Girma, 24, earns her second cap and makes her second start of 2025 after missing the USA first three events of the year. At 24 and playing in just her 46th international game, she is already a veteran leader and considered one of the top defenders in the world. She comes into camp after helping Chelsea complete the treble with Women’s Super League and FA Cup titles. This is her 44th career start and she started all 18 matches she played in 2024. While she has worn the captain’s band in prior matches, however this match will mark the first time she has been the U.S. captain from kickoff.
Tara McKeown, 25, earns her sixth cap and makes her fifth career start. The converted forward will play alongside Naomi Girma at center back for the first time. All of McKeown’s caps have come this year when Girma was away from the National Team. She will see her first action of this camp as she did not feature on May 31 vs. China PR.
Lily Yohannes, 17, who turns 18 years old on June 12, will earn her eighth cap and make her fifth career start. She played the final 30 minutes on April 5 vs. Brazil and earned the penalty kick that clinched the game for the USA. She started and played 45 minutes vs. Brazil on April 8 and played 69 minutes on May 31 vs. China PR.
Ally Sentnor, 21, makes her ninth appearance for the USA and just her fourth start. She has two goals and one assist in her first eight caps.
Alyssa Thompson, 19, will make her fourth straight start and earn her 19th cap. This will be just her eighth career start. Thompson had the assist on Trinity Rodman’s goal against Brazil on April 5. It was her second career USWNT assistalong with one goal. She helped set up the USA’s first goal against China PR on May 31 with a hard run into the box and a scramble for the ball but was not credited with the assist.
Claire Hutton, 19, will earn her third cap and make her third start. She got starts against Australia at the 2025 SheBelieves Cup and against Brazil on April 8, a match where she played the full 90 minutes. She will see her first action of this trip as she did not feature against China PR on May 31.
Sam Coffey, 26, earns her 35th career cap and makes her 26th career start. She started 19 games in 2024 after just two starts in 2022 (her debut year) and 2023. She scored her second career goal on May 31 vs. China PR, against the same team she tallied her first, on an excellent finish via an assist from Cat Macario.
Catarina Macario, 25, earns her 25th career cap and hit double-figures in goals with her score against Brazil – the country of her birth — on April 8. Against Colombia on Feb. 20, 2025, she scored her first USWNT goal in 712 days and against China PR on May 31, she opened the scoring for her third goal of 2025, making her the USA’s leading scorer.
Emily Fox, 26 earns her 67th career cap and will play in her first match for the USA since helping Arsenal FC win the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final on May 24. This will be her 54th start for the USWNT. Fox has played as many minutes or more during this season for club and country as any USWNT player.
Kerry Abello, 25 earns her first USWNT cap after playing 10 times for the various U.S. Youth National Teams. She becomes the 275th woman to earn a USWNT cap and 19th player to be given a first cap by Emma Hayes. Abello is the second player of Cuban heritage to earn a USWNT cap after forward Amy Rodriguez.
