The U.S. Women’s National Team player pool had another impressive week with some history mixed in, too.
Four players scored for their clubs and two more picked up assistswhile Catarina Macario’s penalty goal helped Chelsea clinch the 2024-25 Women’s Super League title. Gisele Thompson, Emma Sears and Lynn Biyendolo scored goals in the NWSL.
Emma Sears Scores in Second Straight Match
Emma Sears has been hot early in the season and scored her fourth goal of the year and second in the last two weeks as Racing Louisville (2-3-2, 8 points) forward only continued that in Week 7 of the NWSL season.
In the 70th minute, Sears ran onto a well-placed through ball and was in on a breakawayquickly struckstrikingquickly after she entered the box. Her USWNT teammate, Jane Campbell, but a piece of the ball with her right foot, but couldn’t keep it out of the net.
Sears currently ranks tied for third in the league in goals.
Lynn Biyendolo Nets First Goal of Season
It seemed like only a matter of time before Lynn Biyendolo scored her first goal of the 2025 NWSL season. The league’s all-time leading scorer tallied in the 37th minute off a corner kick. She first tried to control the ball with her left foot, but a Kansas City defender initially blocked it away. The ball fell to her right foot and she finished a half-volley with her instep from six yards out.
The goal was all the Seattle Reign (7-3-2, 11 points) needed to beat the Current 1-0. The goal was the first of Biyendolo’s Reign career after Gotham FC traded the forward last December.
Thompson Sisters Make History
Defender Gisele Thompson scored her first goal of her NWSL career off an assist from her sister Alyssa Thompson. It was certainly a special moment for the siblings, but it was also historic. They became the first sisters to combine on a goal in league history.
Gisele scored in the 22nd minute to put Angel City up 2-0. Alyssa quickly created the opportunity as she raced down the left wing and bent in a cross that found her sister streaking in the middle. Gisele leapt to flick a nifty shot into the net, sparking a wild celebration between the sisters and their teammates.
Ashley Hatch recorded an assist for the Washington Spirit (4-3-0, 12 points) in the high-scoring affair, but ultimately Angel City (3-2-2, 11 points) triumphed, 4-3, with a goal in stoppage time.
Catarina Macario and Naomi Girma Win WSL Title
Chelsea (18-0-3, 57 points) won its sixth Women’s Super League title in a 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur. The lone score came off a Catarina Macario penalty kick in the 35th minute. Macario has scored 10 goals in all competitions this season through 27 matches as she has come back strong from a long injury layoff.
Naomi Girma subbed in for 27 minutes of the match that clinched the title The first experience for Girma in Europeends with an exclamation point while Chelsea has one more league match against Liverpool on May 10, where it will look finish the WSL season undefeated, before facing Man United in the FA Women’s Cup Final on May 18.
In other WSL action, Phallon Tullis-Joyce’s Manchester United drew 2-2 with rival Manchester City, but that result was good enough to clinch a coveted spot in the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying rounds next season.
