The Florida-born defender talks music, sports and moving to Spain
How have you been?
I’ve been good. I’ve been at camp now, just enjoying it, and now it’s about what we can do.
What does your perfect morning look like?
My perfect morning looks like waking up to some sun. I’m a Florida boy, so that’s kind of my thing. Get a little sun, a nice breakfast, obviously got to brush your teeth first, remember that.
What’s your alarm clock ringtone set to?
It’s a Lil Tjay song, “Give You What You Want.”
Can you give us a line from the song?
“I just wanna show you that I could do better.”
What do you like to do when you’re not playing soccer?
Honestly, I like to go to the beach or stroll around the city. I do everything. I'm a very active guy.
What are three words you would use to describe yourself?
Energetic, happy and athletic.
What’s the last book you read?
I couldn’t give you the name for that one.
Would you say you’re a big reader?
No. I’ve read a couple books, but I would not say I’m a big reader.
If you could go pro in any other sport, what would it be?
There’s an obvious answer to this one. I would say football, just because I have it in my genes.
Do you have a favorite football team?
Green Bay Packers.
Any reason why?
Maybe because my dad, I don't know. My dad grew up there.
What’s the perfect temperature for your room that you set it to?
It can’t be too cold, but it can't be too hot. I’m thinking like 65 for me.
What’s one travel essential?
Deodorant. Toothbrush. Two mandatory.
What’s been your favorite thing about living in Spain?
The food. I can’t complain. The food’s been really good, and it’s also been really cheap.
What was the biggest culture shock when you moved?
Siesta. Four to eight, there’s nothing open. It’s the worst. For me, it’s just so unusual.
Who on the USMNT would you give the aux to?
That boy Tim. Tim Weah got it. I can’t lie.
If you could create the perfect music festival lineup, who are your headliners?
How many do I get? (Four.) I got Drake. I’ll go SZA. I’ll go Gunna, and then I’ll go Alicia Keys.
What’s something on your bucket list right now?
Win the World Cup, baby.
What’s something new you’re wanting to learn?
I want to learn how to play golf. That’s something that all these boys do, and I need to learn.
If you could go golfing with any guys on the team, who are you going with?
Skill-wise or personality? (Vibes.) I’ll go with Antonee Robinson and Christian Pulisic. They’ve got the vibes and the skills, so they can teach me something, too.
If you could raid somebody’s closet on the National Team, who would it be?
Chris Richards. I feel like he’s got some style to him, for sure.
If you could swap lives with anyone in the world, who would you choose?
It’s gonna be funny, but I would say LeBron.
What’s the first thing you’re doing as LeBron?
Dunking, between the legs.
How do you get in the zone before a match?
I got music. I take a little stroll to walk, usually some coffee. That’s my routine, for sure.
Who’s the first person you text after a match?
Mom and Dad. Those are the people that supported me, so I’ve got to give them support back after a game.
What does an ideal rest day look like to you?
I wake up late, sleep in. Go get some brunch, be by the beach. Go enjoy time with friends or family, and then just see where else the day takes me.
What’s one word that describes the way you feel representing the National Team?
Passion. For me, that’s something you need to be able to bring to support the National Team and play for it as well.
When this tournament is over, and you look back, what do you hope people say about the way that you carried yourself?
Like I said before, it’s passion, but I hope they see the kind of confidence and resilience I can bring to the team and be that kind of guy they can count on when times are rough.
