Pearl Cecil is not the person you will find smack dab in the middle of a team dance party.
But that doesn’t mean she can’t execute a fire Tik-Tok dance trend.
She’s not the person who will be the facilitator of a group conversation with her teammates. She’d rather sit back and listen before chiming in.
But that doesn’t mean she’s not remarkably intelligent and articulate.
In fact, Cecil is one of the most respected players on the 2026 U.S. U-20 Women’s World Cup Team, despite being one of the five players on the roster born in 2008, two years younger than the 2006 age cut-off for this tournament.
She is what you’d call a “quiet leader,” formed in the mold of former U.S. Women’s National Team captain Becky Sauerbrunn, who like Cecil, attended the University of Virginia, played under famed head coach Steve Swanson and is a bit of an introvert off the field.
“First and foremost, I always try to do my job on the field,” said Cecil, who at 5-10 strikes an imposing figure in the center of the U.S. defense. “If you want to be a leader, you have to do your job consistently well. Once your teammates see that, that gives you credibility to guide and lead them. Being confident is so important. Once you have that in your game, you get comfortable and then you’re able to invest in helping your teammates and giving them confidence.”
That’s some impressive self-awareness for an 18-year-old, but while Cecil may be young — she was in just one U-20 WNT camp before making this roster — she’s one of just 10 players on the team who already has a FIFA World Cup on her resume.
Cecil played every minute of the four matches at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, a tournament in which the USA dominated in all four games before agonizingly going out in the Round of 16 after an epic penalty kick shoot-out with the Netherlands. She served as team captain in three of the four games, cherishing the rare honor of wearing the armband for your country in a World Cup.
She says that experience was invaluable, not only for her growth as a player, but in enabling her to head into this World Cup with that important state of mind: confidence. She praises her teammates, some of whom have been involved for the whole cycle, for immediately welcoming her into the group.
“When you have people that are there for you, players and coaches, people who make you feel like you belong, that’s great for team culture,” she said. “No one here treats you like you’re younger. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough. It’s about the player you are and the person you want to be.”
Cecil is fully aware that as a center back, it’s her job to be vocal, to organize, to see the entire field, to anticipate things before they happen. In short, to be someone her teammates can count on.
“On the field, you always have to have a leader’s presence,” said Cecil. “You can’t be timid or scared. Off the field, I’m still working on getting closer with players as I know that translates to the trainings and games. Some of the pros on our World Cup Team, I’ve never met before this camp, so I’m trying to get to know people and build relationships. I’m working on being more vocal, and the more comfortable I get, the louder I get. I’m finding my role and I’m embracing it.”
Goalkeeper Evan O’Steen, who is also a member of this U-20 World Cup Team, played behind Cecil at last year’s U-17 Women’s World Cup. She is a big admirer of Cecil’s technical skills and calmness during matches.
“Pearl played attacking midfielder before she played center back and she’s a very technical player because of that,” said O’Steen, who is a rookie with Seattle Reign FC in the NWSL. “Pearl has a very high IQ and that made it easy for me, especially, because she always knew what to do with the ball and she always had a good read on the game as it developed.”
Heading into the U-20 World Cup, Cecil is taking all the lessons she learned as a leader in the U-17 World Cup last year. First and foremost are the mental challenges.
“(U.S. head coach) Vicky (Jepson) says it to us a lot, but you have to be ruthless,” said Cecil, an Encinitas, Calif., native who played for the San Diego Surf at the youth level. “On defense, you have to have the mentality that every play matters, every moment matters. You never know when it’s going to be your last scoring chance in a game, or your opponent’s last chance. You can never let up and you have to be one hundred percent locked in for ninety minutes, 120 minutes, or penalty kicks, whatever it takes.”
Cecil nailed her penalty kick — the team’s fourth attempt — in that shootout against the Netherlands in which both teams made their first six kicks before the Dutch made their seventh and the USA failed toconvert. The USA gave up a third-minute goal in the game, only to equalize in the 57th through Cecil’s current U-20 WNT teammate Micayla Johnson, and the Americans outshot Netherlands 24-9 for the match, so Cecil knows all too well just how small the margins are in a World Cup.
“The World Cup is just different,” said Cecil. “In college or the pros, whether you tie a game, or win a game, or lose a game, of course the result matters a lot, but you often have so many games left to play. In the World Cup, from the first minute, every game, every goal, every point matters so much. So, we focus on what’s in front of us, put our whole minds and bodies into it, and when that’s over, we learn from it and zero in on the next one. It takes a lot of mental energy, but I think this team is full of mentally tough players.”
Which brings us back to Becky Sauerbrunn, role model extraordinaire.
“She just did her job,” said Cecil of the Cavalier legend who earned 219 caps for the USA, played in the 2014 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Cup (the USA finished third) and won three NWSL titles, two World Cups and two Olympic gold medals. “She wasn’t necessarily the loudest, she wasn’t the fastest player, but her IQ was so high in the way she read the game, and she knew how to play to her strengths and maximize the strengths of her teammates. You always want to work on your weaknesses, but knowing your strengths and always bringing those to the field can set you apart.”
Cecil missed a chunk of her freshman season playing for the U.S. U-17s and now will miss part of her sophomore campaign while in Poland with the U.S. U-20s, but to her, it’s all worth it. These are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that she and her soccer sisters are living.
“This team is like a second family,” said Cecil. “There are people here who you can really connect with, people who have been through the competitive fires that not many people go through. When things get rough, and they always do, they are people that you know will be there for you in the low times and celebrate with you when things are going well. It’s like playing with your best friends.”
And who wouldn’t want to speak loudly about that?
