NWSL playoff race heats up
With just one matchday left in the 2026 NWSL regular season, seven teams have clinched their spot in the playoffs. At the top of the standings is Gotham FC, which earned a 2-1 win on Saturday behind a game-winner by center back Tierna Davidson. Decision Day on Nov. 1 will determine whether Gotham or San Diego Wave FC secures the Supporters’ Shield. Another USWNT defender on the scoresheet this weekend was Gisele Thompson, who helped Angel City FC to a 2-0 win as the team is still in the hunt for a top-four spot and home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
From the outside looking in are Seattle Reign FC, North Carolina Courage and Denver Summit FC. Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey made four saves against Utah Royals FC on Friday to earn a crucial point for the Reign, which is holding on to the final playoff spot. Golden Boot leader Ashley Sanchez and the Courage will host captain Lindsey Heaps and the Summit on Decision Day, with the winner possibly earning the last playoff spot with a Seattle loss to Orlando.

Croix Bethune sets new assists record
Also heading to the NWSL postseason is the Kansas City Current, which features the new single-season assists record holder Croix Bethune. The midfielder earned her 11th assist of the season and her 23rd career assist in the Current’s 2-1 victory over the Washington Spirit on Sunday. Bethune logged 10 assists in her rookie season in 2024, tying the league record set by Tobin Heath in 2016.
