ST. PAUL, Minn. – Heading into its fourth match in the span of 11 days, the U.S. Men’s National Team is ready to compete for its fourth straight win to wrap the first camp in a new era under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
First, a final challenge against the 27th-ranked team in the world and another Round of 16 participant at FIFA World Cup 2026. The USA’s fixture against Canada on Tuesday, Oct. 6 will be the fourth international match for the U.S. in the window and second straight against a Concacaf rival.
A four-match window poses different challenges than a traditional two-match set. More time on the road, more minutes on the legs and less time to recover between physical matches.
This kind of truncated schedule isn't new to players. Weeks in Major League Soccer, for example, sometimes feature Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday matches. Still, Pochettino and his coaching staff are determined to manage the players’ load as best they can as together they seek the program’s first win over Canada since 2023.
“Even if we are competing a lot and traveling, and that can affect [them], we are going to be ready for tomorrow,” Pochettino said. “Fresh energy, and I think it's a good opportunity for continuous growing in that camp.”

The objective, according to Pochettino, remains for his team to keep building an identity. In the first camp of the 2030 FIFA World Cup cycle, Pochettino’s aims are rooted in player development and roster depth after calling 13 players into their first camp.
One benefit of a longer camp is more opportunity for the team to spend time together. A player might sit next to someone different at dinner than he did three weeks ago when camp began on Sept. 21. A fourth match might allow more players, like one of the four goalkeepers on the roster, for example, more active minutes.
A four-match set also allows Pochettino to employ heavy rotation in his lineups. Pochettino made 10 changes to the starting XI against Chile on Sept. 29 from the opener against Peru on Sept. 26. The same applied to Mexico with midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, forward Julian Hall and midfielder Gio Reyna as the only three holdovers from the previous match.
In a camp that has featured a blend of veterans and players earning their first caps, the players are using the extended time together to their advantage. Pochettino said the younger players have been “smart” about their behavior and listening to the veterans. Experienced players, too, have been invested in learning. Berhalter, for example, said he’s been asking captain Tyler Adams every day how he can get better.
“That is in the way that we need to keep going, to build that chemistry between the senior players with the new players,” Pochettino said. “I think that is one of the most important things that happened in this window, to have three weeks to build this relationship.”

Relationships have been building between the two groups, which has led to winning results on the pitch. Veterans made it known before the Mexico match that the younger players will be needed. Their influence has allowed the debutants to feel comfortable asking questions and play more freely on the pitch.
In turn, the team has produced three victories so far this window, each by a margin of at least two goals or more.
The latest was arguably the biggest win of camp so far. The Oct. 3 match against Mexico was one that players had circled on their calendars ever since the announcement, and the rivalry lived up to the billing. Behind three different goal scorers, the U.S. delivered a true team performance to defeat its Concacaf rival 3-0 in front of a packed house at State Farm Stadium.
Seven USMNT players saw their first action on the senior level in a USMNT-Mexico match. Even those who didn’t enter the game, like midfielder Adri Mehmeti, got to see up close what the rivalry was actually like.
“Coming off three-for-three wins, especially against a rival like Mexico, my first one to experience with the team, it’s a really good feeling,” Mehmeti said. “This game [against Canada] is going to be similar, of course. We’re probably going to go after it and go out and try to get the win and play the best football we can.”

Next for the U.S. is the chance to defeat its rival to the north, fellow 2026 co-host Canada. As far back as USA-Mexico goes, USA-Canada goes back even further. The first matchup of the series took place in 1925 in Montréal, and the U.S. owns the all-time record 17W-12L-13D.
“It’s a bigger game,” said Berhalter, a member of Canada’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC from 2022-206. “They’re a team that’s high-energy, very high-pressing, very athletic... so, it’s going to be a fun game. We know a lot of their guys very well. For me, personally, too, it’s an exciting game.”
Like the U.S., Canada is coming off a Round of 16 performance in FIFA World Cup 2026. After finishing second in Group B behind Switzerland, Canada edged South Africa by one goal in the first-ever Round of 32 to advance before eventually falling 3-0 to AFCON title holders, Morocco.
Canada is also using the window to bring up some of its young talent. Les Rouges are led by Atlético Madrid forward Jonathan David who in just three appearances in La Liga this season has scored three goals and added an assist.
Canada has played one fewer match than the U.S. this window, shutting out both Chile and Peru. Led by former USMNT player and MLS head coach Jesse Marsch, Canada have yet to concede a goal since the World Cup, which the U.S. with its high-octane offense will look to change as soon as the opening whistle blows at Allianz Field.
“It’s not easy, but I can tell you that the behavior of the players, the energy of the players, their mentality and commitment are amazing.” Pochettino said. “That is why I want to congratulate the players and the staff in the way it lasts nearly three week window for the first time. We built that journey together. It was an amazing thing. I hope to finish the window in a very good way.”
