ATLANTA – U.S. Soccer today announced the draw and schedule for the Third Qualifying Round of the 2027 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as the field of amateur teams competing for a spot in next year’s competition narrows. There will be 32 matches held across the country Oct. 31-Nov. 1 to determine the teams that will advance to the Final Qualifying Round.
The U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer's national club championship, is entering its 112th edition and is the only U.S. team sport competition in which amateurs have the chance to compete directly against professionals.
A record 155 amateur clubs entered the Qualifying Rounds this year, competing for 16 available slots in the Tournament Proper, which kicks off next spring. The Qualifying Rounds will conclude Nov. 21-22, with the 16 advancing clubs set to face off against professional clubs in the Tournament Proper.
With the goal of minimizing overall total travel distance, matchups and byes for the Qualifying Rounds were determined by a combination of geographical considerations and random selection. Host teams are determined by random selection.
The Second Qualifying Round welcomed a pair of former Open Cup juggernauts: the four-time champion New York Greek American SC (1967, 1968, 1969, 1974) and three-time winners NY Pancyprian Freedoms (1980, 1982, 1983). Both emerged victorious in the Second Qualifying Round and are two wins away from the Tournament Proper. The Greeks are seeking a first Tournament Proper appearance since 2015 as they take on a confident Lansdowne Yonkers FC side. Meanwhile, the Pancyprian-Freedoms are chasing their second Tournament Proper appearance in three years and will face a NY Renegades FC side that is seeking its third Tournament Proper appearances in as many years.
In addition to the pair of inter-New York matchups, a collection of other cross-town contests are set for the Third Qualifying Round. Midwest Premier League side Chicago House AC will take on the UPSL’s Chicago Nation FC. Down in Houston, ASC New Stars and Houston Lions FC will look to pick up a second consecutive victory against an inter-city foe. At the foot of the Rockies, Colorado Premier League rivals FC Denver and Harpos FC will face off in the Denver area in hopes of inching one match closer to the Tournament Proper. Finally, up in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia Lone Star FC of the UPSL and WC Predators of the APSL will each be eager to add to eastern Pennsylvania’s rich Open Cup history.
The Open Cup returns to Fall River, Mass.—home of the four-time champion Fall River Marksmen (1924, 1927, 1930, 1931) and 1917 winners Fall River Rovers—as UPSL side Fall River FC kicks off the Third Qualifying Round against the APSL’s KO Elites FC of Connecticut on Saturday afternoon.
Other key fixtures to watch in the northeast include Pennsylvania-based APSL rivals Vereinigung Erzgebirge and Colonial SC meeting at the historic Vereinigung Erzgebirge Clubhouse, Bay State Soccer League and Massachusetts foes FC Omens and CD Faialense facing off in West Roxbury, and USL League Two Great Forest Division adversaries Steel City FC and Akron City FC matching up in Wexford, Pa.
On the West Coast, CF San Rafael and Napa Valley 1839 FC will meet in an all-The League for Clubs contest in San Francisco. Just east of Oakland, San Ramon FC and the Oakland Stompers will face off on Sunday evening. The Third Qualifying Round concludes with another California clash on Sunday evening, as the Southwest Premier League’s JSC Jasa will look to extend its incredible form following a 20-1 Second Qualifying Round victory, now taking on the San Francisco Soccer Football League’s SF Vikings SC.
