The U.S. Women’s National Team is less than a week away from kicking off the first of two highly anticipated matches against Spain, the world’s top-ranked women’s soccer team and defending Women’s World Cup champion.
Here’s everything you need to know about La Roja before they take on the USA:
When are the USWNT vs. Spain matches?
The USA will host Spain on Oct. 10 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. (2:30 p.m. ET on TBS and HBO Max in English and on Telemundo, Universo and Peacock in Spanish) in a match presented by Purina and on Oct. 13 at Subaru Park in Chester, Pa. (7 p.m. ET on TNT and HBO Max in English and on Universo and Peacock in Spanish) in a match presented by AT&T. Both matches will also be available on the radio on Westwood One Sports with the Oct. 13 game also available in Spanish on Fútbol de Primera.
What is the all-time history between the USWNT and Spain?
The USA and Spain have a relatively short history, only facing each other four times in the last seven years. Their first meeting was a 1-0 USA win in early 2019, just before the sides met again in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Round of 16 when a Megan Rapinoe brace led the USWNT to a 2-1 victory. The only USA-Spain match to take place in the United States thus far was during the 2020 SheBelieves Cup in Harrison, N.J., when a late Julie Ertz header was the game-winner in another USA win. In the most recent meeting in 2022, Spain picked up its first-ever victory over the USA, winning 2-0 in Pamplona, Spain.
What is Spain’s world ranking?
Spain is currently ranked first in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings and has held the top spot since August of 2025. Spain has not been ranked below third place since June of 2023, right before winning the World Cup, when it was ranked sixth. The USA is currently ranked second, which means October will feature two matchups between the two top-ranked teams in the world.
What is Spain’s recent form?
Spain most recently competed in UEFA Women’s World Cup qualifying, where it finished atop Group C (5W-1L-0D) to earn a berth to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil next summer. Prior to qualifying, La Roja won their second consecutive UEFA Women's Nations League title after defeating Germany in the two-leg Final in December of 2025. Spain has lost just two games in regulation time since the end of the 2024 Olympics – a span of 27 matches – with both of those coming to England at Wembley Stadium in London.
Who is Spain’s head coach?
Spain is led by former Spanish striker Sonia Bermúdez. The 41-year-old played professionally for nearly two decades and scored over 250 goals during her career playing for clubs across Spain plus a short stint in the NWSL in 2014. Bermúdez competed with Spain’s U-19 squad before joining the senior team in 2008. She scored 34 goals in 61 international appearances, including three group stage matches at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
After retirement, Bermúdez coached Spain at the U-19, U-20 and U-23 age groups, winning back-to-back UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championships in 2023 and 2024. She was announced head coach of the senior team in August of 2025.
Who are key Spanish players to watch?
Spain recently announced its 25-player roster, which most notably did not feature three-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí, who is still recovering from an injury. The roster does include Alèxia Putellas, two-time world player of the year who recently joined the London City Lionesses after an extensive and highly successful career at FC Barcelona.
On the defensive end, Spain is captained by tenured center back Irene Paredes, who has earned 128 caps for the national team since 2011. The goalkeeping group is headed by 25-year-old Cata Coll, the starting goalkeeper for Barcelona.
