ATLANTA (June 22, 2026) – Hernán Garcias has been named the first full-time head coach of the U.S. Men’s Futsal National Team, the original showcase team of U.S. Soccer’s Extended National Teams program. Garcias brings 35 years of elite Futsal experience as both a player and coach to his new role at U.S. Soccer, including previous head coaching experience with Boca Juniors of Argentina and Club Asti Calcio of Italy. As a player, Garcias earned over 100 caps with Argentina and represented La Albiceleste in four different FIFA Futsal World Cups, as well as playing club futsal in both Argentina and Italy.
Following the hiring of Marcelo Mendes as the first full-time head coach in Beach MNT history, this hire is a powerful reflection of the Federation’s commitment to the U.S. Way, showcasing the organization's investment in resources, infrastructure, and comprehensive support for the Extended National Teams, ensuring they are fully prepared to compete and succeed on the world stage.
"Hernán's experience speaks for itself, but what stood out throughout the process was his passion for the game, his desire to develop people, and his clear vision for building a successful national team program,” said Stuart Sharp, U.S. Soccer’s Head of Extended National Teams. “As we continue to invest in our Extended National Teams through the U.S. Way, it's important that we provide our players with the best possible environments to learn and perform on the world stage. Hernán will play an important role in that journey, and we're excited to welcome him to U.S. Soccer."
"Taking on this role as head coach of the U.S. Men’s Futsal National Team is a deeply proud moment for me and the culmination of years of preparation,” Garcias said. “I’m incredibly excited to dive in and work alongside U.S. Soccer and the entire futsal community to keep building something special. My heart is set on inspiring every young player across the country, creating a standard that becomes the ultimate dream for all American talent. I’m fully committed to building a path that we can all be proud of together."
Garcias made his mark as a player at four different FIFA Futsal World Cups in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 for the Argentina Futsal National Team, while earning more than 100 caps for La Albiceleste. He helped the side out of the group stage in each of the four tournaments, aiding in a fourth-place finish in 2004 in Chinese Taipei, before captaining Argentina at the 2008 tournament in Brazil. He also represented Argentina in five different Copa América tournaments, leading the side to the title in 2003.
At the club level, Garcia played more than 200 matches in the Argentine First Division from 1995-2000. Following five years playing at home, he moved abroad to play in Italy, appearing in 560 matches for various clubs from 2000-2014. His playing highlights while in Italy include winning the Italian Serie A title with Montesilvano in 2009-10 and following that up the next season by winning the UEFA Futsal Champions League title with the same club in 2010-11. Garcias also won the Coppa Italia with Nepi in 2004-05 and claimed the Italian Serie B title with the same club in 2002-03.
Garcias also brings over a decade of high-level Futsal coaching experience to U.S. Soccer, having first led Italian Serie A side Club Asti Calcio to the Coppa Italia and Winter Cup titles in 2014-15. He has also led the Boca Juniors Futsal team in two different stints, from 2016-18 and 2020-24. During those periods, Garcias won two Argentine Primera División titles in 2017 and 2020, he also led the club to Argentine Supercopa triumphs in 2018, 2022 and 2023 and guided the side to qualification for the Copa Libertadores in 2018 and 2022.
During his time at Boca, he also served as the club’s overall Futsal Manager, overseeing a structure of over 1,000 male and female players across 36 teams from youth to adult, as well as leading the operations for the club's men’s and women’s professional teams.
Garcias will hold his first training camp with the Futsal MNT from June 23-28 on the Georgia Power Court at the new Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Fayetteville, Ga. The Futsal MNT will swing back into full programming later this year, as U.S. Soccer plans to schedule friendly matches and international trips to help the team in its preparation for the 2028 Concacaf Futsal Championship, which serves as qualification for that year’s FIFA Futsal World Cup.
The USA has participated in six FIFA Futsal World Cups, finishing third in 1989 and reaching the final of the 1992 tournament, taking home the silver medal in its highest-ever finish at the competition. The USA’s other FIFA Futsal World Cup appearances came in 1996, 2004, 2008 and 2021, where it finished second in Concacaf Futsal Championship.
