NATIONAL TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
- Saved three penalties in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal shootout vs. Costa Rica on July 2, becoming the second USMNT goalkeeper to accomplish the feat after Tony Meola in 1991; named Man of the Match.
- Started all six matches during the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, recording two clean sheets as the USMNT advanced to the final.
- Made his USMNT debut on June 7, 2025, vs. Turkiye in Columbus, playing the full 90 minutes and making three saves.
- Recorded his first USMNT clean sheet on June 16, 2025, vs. Trinidad and Tobago in the Gold Cup group stage.
2026 FIFA WORLD CUP CYCLE
- First called up to the USMNT in January 2025 for a training camp before earning his debut in the June window.
- Made his USMNT debut on June 7, 2025, vs. Turkiye in a friendly in Columbus, starting in goal and making three saves in 90 minutes.
- Started all six 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup matches (June 16 - July 6): group stage vs. Trinidad and Tobago (clean sheet), Saudi Arabia, and Haiti; quarterfinal vs. Costa Rica (three penalty saves in shootout); semifinal vs. Guatemala (2-1 win); and the final vs. Mexico.
- Compiled a record of 8 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses across 12 consecutive starts through March 2026.
- Called up to the March 2026 camp for World Cup preparation friendlies starting in goal vs. Portugal at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
CLUB HIGHLIGHTS
- Named New York City FC MVP for the 2024 season after recording 135 saves (third in MLS), 6 clean sheets, and a 73.4 percent save percentage (fourth in MLS) while starting all 34 matches.
- Posted a career-best eight clean sheets in the 2025 MLS season with 108 saves, helping NYCFC set a club playoff record with four consecutive clean sheets.
- Acquired by NYCFC from the Philadelphia Union in January 2023.
- Signed as a homegrown player with the Philadelphia Union in December 2018; made 54 appearances (2019-2022), including recording a clean sheet on Nov. 8, 2020, vs. New England in the Supporters' Shield clincher.
- Made his professional debut on April 19, 2019, at age 20, entering as a substitute vs. Montreal.
PERSONAL
- Son of the late Dr. Andrew Freese, a neurosurgeon and Harvard Medical School/MIT graduate who pioneered gene therapy research before passing in 2021, and Marcia Freese, who holds an MBA in healthcare management.
- Siblings include sister Lyssa and brothers Jack and Tim; both brothers attended Harvard, with Jack competing on the heavyweight rowing team (2011-12).
- Holds German citizenship through paternal heritage.
- Graduated from Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, Pa.; attended Harvard University (2016-2018), earning Second Team All-Ivy honors as a sophomore before leaving early to pursue his professional career.
- Interested in interior design. Bought an apartment in New York City in May 2025 that he gutted and renovated with white coloring, ornate details and dark hardwood floors. Says he wants to add crown molding during the offseason to give the place some charm. Describes his style as ‘French lounge café.’
- Favorite music is EDM remixes. Says one of his favorite artists is Two Friends, and he’s been to a lot of their concerts.
- On the board of directors and helps with fundraising and mentoring at South Bronx United, located in New York next to Yankee Stadium. The organization provides support, including mentoring, workforce development, and immigration legal services while using soccer as a vehicle for change.
